About the series

Inspired in part by artist Daren Thomas Magee (who says he makes work with messages he needs to hear), illustrator Elizabeth Hadle (whose class in “personal power symbols” is super fun) and artist-collaborator Rebecca Odes (who suggested after three previous versions of this comic that I make the Inner Me an octopus, duh)...

In 1951, Barbara Johns led a student strike at her segregated Virginia high school. She was just 16, but her action sparked a lawsuit that formed part of the basis of the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education supreme court ruling. (Painting exhibited at the Leon Family Gallery in Virginia Beach).

Of all the wonders of Cuba (Havana cathedral, cigars, collectivism), cars are the most fun to draw.

Author Speed Dating 11.22.16

This past Spring, I joined a group of 50 writers in New York participating in an event known variously as Writer’s Gong Show or JBC Speed dating: each author has two minutes to explain their books to an auditorium packed with book festival programmers. It’s insane. I calmed my nerves by madly doodling in my notebook. These drawings were published in the inaugural November 2017 issue of the literary journal Paper Brigade.
